NEST names Sarah Thomas as new Executive Director

The longtime leaders of a Greater Cincinnati community development corporation are stepping down and a new executive director is taking their place.

Northsiders Engaged in Sustainable Transformation founder and director Stefanie Sunderland has left the nonprofit after 13 years. Project Michael Berry, a founding NEST member and project manager, is also leaving his role.

Sarah Thomas has been named to the newly combined role of executive director and project manager. The Northside resident has an extensive background in community development, historic renovation and property management. She plans to expand NEST’s homebuyer assistance programs, accessibility and visitability along with commercial development.

NEST was founded to strategically transform blighted and vacant properties while turning targeted areas of Northside into new opportunities for homeownership.

During Sutherland’s tenure, NEST completed 22 renovations and 16 historically significant homes were saved from demolition, while four new single-family homes were built. Fourteen homes were also reserved for affordable housing.

“Stephanie and Michael have proven to be an incredible team over the past 10 years,” NEST vice president Bob Carbon said in a statement. “Stephanie’s passion and vision for the neighborhood paired with Michael’s drive and execution have left an indelible mark on the community. Their legacy will be present in every project NEST takes on moving forward.”
